Car theft is a serious problem in the United States. According to Highway Loss Data Institute’s report, 2.1 vehicles per 1,000 will be stolen. This may not sound like a lot, but if you happen to be the unlucky driver who’s vehicle got stolen, this number would be taken more seriously.

Volkswagen’s answer to car theft is something called Volkswagen Smart Key. Volkswagen Smart Key is a technology that uses “immobilizer” anti-theft system. If a car thief tries to start your Volkswagen, the Immobilizer system will generate a unique code for your car’s electronic infrastructure. This action locks the ignition, fuel and other systems until you try to start the car again with the Volkswagen Smart Key.

Essentially, the immobilizer system in your car is paired with a unique Volkswagen Smart Key, which allows for generation of unique codes that either locks the engine (if someone tries to start the car without the correct Smart Key) or starts the engine (if you use the originally paired Volkswagen Smart Key).

What happens if you lost Volkswagen Smart Key?
